Day III, Olympics & Cathedrals & Trains - oh my(!), Montreal

So, the plan for our last full day in Montreal (we come back for a short time as we fly out of here next Friday) was to see the 1976 Olympic Stadium, then to the Notre Dame Basilica that we saw last night. After that we'll head to our train to Quebec City.

We never made it to Notre Dame, but found an even more beautiful cathedral. Wait and see!

Ready to go!

Our hotel in Montreal. We were on the 12th floor.

The Metro isn't cool looking like in Europe, but I thought I should take a photo anyway.

Kurt on the subway, heading to the Olympic Stadium.

Okay, so this Metro station has some coolness!

We arrived at the Parc Olympique de Montreal after about 20 minutes on the Metro, and switching lines too. It's a BIG park!

Map of the park.

The Olympic Stadium with the nations flags in front.

Info on the tower, in an exhibit of Great Towers of the World.

They are in the book for "tallest man-made leaning tower."

Made out of wood pieces.

The pool area was the only part of the stadium open to the public, the rest is a gym and the actual indoor stadium (where the Expos used to play) isn't open until July.

There were 4 different pools that we saw, 5 if you include the small toddler wading pool that perhaps was an addition later?

The Olympic symbol and year behind the diving apparatus, which was huge!

After that, we headed up the tower to the top-floor observatory. We got to take a funicular!

Looking up towards the top from the funicular car.

A view of the Olympic Park from the funicular car.

The observatory, as soon as you step out of the funicular car.

The stats on the Olympic Tower.

Montreal cityscape and Parc Mont-Royal (on the right) from the observatory. We hiked to the radio tower on the top of Parc Mont-Royal!!

Looking straight down from the observatory at the stadium.

Selfie in front of the Olympic backdrop.

OMG, Kurt has the Olympic torch!!

From there we heading back into the city, and decided to head one stop further than Notre-Dame to see the Bell Center, locate the train station, and then walk back towards Notre-Dame.

The lobby of the Bell Center, where the Canadiens play. They wouldn't let us in the center or the Hall of Fame with the backpack, which upset Kurt - - that was two big sports things he couldn't do today. We did, however, hear part of Prince's soundcheck for his performance that night.

The ceiling above the Canadiens logo, these are the Hall of Famers.

After the Bell Center, we headed to Gare Centrale, the train station, to have some lunch.

Gare Centrale

The "library" eating nook in the awesome multi-ethnic food court underneath Gare Centrale.

After we had a lovely lunch (so MUCH vegetarian options in this city!), we headed back above-ground to Notre-Dame. We never made it though, as we immediately saw and even BETTER looking church next to the train station!

This is the Mary-Queen-of-the-World Cathedral, which is Roman Catholic. I simply LOVE the green copper domes.

The first impression is AWE inspiring!

Kurt, doing his best Vanna White to show off a Confessional booth.

This was the first church I'd seen that had massive paintings around the walls and not stained glass.

The ever-so-grand alter.

The dome above the altar.

One of the cross-pieces of the "cross" shaped church, as all cathedrals are.

Another painting, perhaps of a teacher?

The organ, which is above the front door as you walk in.

One of the many side chapels, this one a burial room for the archbishops. I believe the golden gentleman is the first AB ... born in 1799, this is an old church.

By far the coolest holy-water chalice I've ever seen!

The front view of the Mary-Queen-of-the-World cathedral ... WOWOWOWOWOW! I love just the statuary on the roof!

The side view ... oh my, I think I love this view the best as it shows much of the statuary, the grandeur of the building, and the two green copper domes. It was stunning, and I am so grateful that we found it. More marvelous than Notre-Dame I believe, at least the outside of ND anyway, as we never did see the inside.

From there we started to head back to the hotel to retrieve our luggage, but found a couple of fabulous buildings along the way (as we always seemed to do!), and made a quick pit-stop at the Victoria Square Metro to see that art deco stop.

St. George's Anglican Church ... thinking of you Georgia and Tra!!

The Gare Windsor ... I'm thinking it's the original, and old, train station - it was MASSIVE!

The Victoria Square art deco Parisienne Metro station.

It was gorgeous!

HRH herself.

The info on the art deco Metro stop, unfortunately in French. I'll have to translate it!

And that was it for Montreal ... now we head to Quebec City on the train!

Selfie on the train! We upgraded to Business Class, and oh my, was it worth it!!

Leaving Montreal behind ...

I love that you can see the speed-effect in the grass.

Mozzarella and roasted tomato ravioli in arugula pesta - with all the fabulous sides! It was OUTSTANDING!!! And, Kurt's came with wine too. And after dinner drinks and coffee and chocolate, oh my was the upgrade SO worth it!

Sunset on the train.

One of the several gorgeous river crossings we made!

We arrived!! It was just about 3 hours exactly from Montreal to Quebec City. We grabbed a taxi at the train station, made a quick stop at the grocery store, then headed to our QC home. It is AWESOME! The owners even left Kurt a bottle of homemade wine.  :)

The main room of our QC home. Love the exposed brick!

Gorgeous bedroom! The window looks out at the river!

A party boat that passed us by at about 10:15pm last night ... music pumping and bodies gyrating on the double-decker dance floor!

Paris print and fireplace

Okay, I cheated, this shot is from this morning. From the patio.  :D  Happiness!!!

Looking out the main-room window, with the patio (and my coffee) in the foreground, and the river in the background.

The building we are staying in, we are on the ground floor on the right. Love the cliffs behind us!

And that was it for Day III of the honeymoon! We had a FABULOUS night's sleep, slept WAY in and have a GORGEOUS first day in QC to explore!!

Thank you for joining us on our day, and we hope you'll come back!

:D
