So, the plan was to walk to Lower Town, take the funicular up to Upper Town, then walk down Grande Allee to Ave Cartier to do some shopping. After that we'd see.
I've just realized that we forgot to take our traditional "heading-out" selfie! :(
C'est la vie!
Looking up at the funicular from Lower Town on Rue du Petit-Champlain
First view from the funicular car, looking at the small park that abuts the funicular
Ah, now we can see the Lawrence River from the funicular!
Funicular selfie!
Last pic from the funicular, and a great one!
From there, we headed out into the park/square in front of Chateau Frontenac, then headed south on Rue St-Louis, which would turn into Grande Allee after the ramparts.
The square/park in front of Frontenac ... beautiful!
I just cannot walk past Frontenac without photographing it! :)
Rue Sainte-Louis in Upper Town ... so quaint!
First view of the Rue St-Louis rampart gate ... with a sweet horse-and-carriage ride too!
Rue St-Louis gate to, or in this case from, Upper Town
View from the top of the ramparts, looking west away from the city
View of the parliament building inside a rampart crenelation - cool!
View of Frontenac from the top of the ramparts at the Rue St-Louis gate
Rampart selfie!
Close-up of the parliament roof ... gorgeous!!!
After passing through the Rue St-Louis rampart gate, the street becomes Grande Allee and passes the Hotel du Parliament on the right and will pass the Citadel and Plains of Abraham on the left. We started to look for a lunch spot at this point.
We got tickets to this! The Mastercard Memorial Cup (official site), a championship tournament (Wiki site) for Canada's junior hockey league, played since 1919. Now, the way I understand it from Kurt, is "junior" doesn't mean underage, more like semi-pro in the States, as many of these men will go on to play in the NHL - - so, for a sports fan like Kurt, this is super exciting! And, we get to see Quebec City's team plan, the Remparts, so I imagine the crowd will be EXCITED!! Also, this is the first time QC has hosted this cup since 2003, and hasn't won it since 2006. Lastly, it is being played at the Colisee Pepsi, the same coliseum that the now-defunct Quebec Nordiques played, QC's old NHL team. Big stuff!! We'll go our last night here, Wednesday.
The entrance to the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham on Rue St-Louis
Ah! Lunch! We ate at Le 3 Brasseurs, or the 3 brewers. It was FANTASTIC food!! And a lovely location too
My beloved at lunch
Midday repast selfie!
Gorgeous Queen Anne homes along Grande Allee, after lunch and still heading south to shop on Ave Cartier
So many churches, so little time. :D
More lovely homes on Grande Allee
We've turned onto Ave Cartier, and there were cool art installations all along the street!
A super quaint food shop and hotel on Ave Cartier
Well, we didn't find the coin shop we wanted, or rather we found the "coin" shop but it was a sport clothing shop with "coin" in the name. :(
So, we decided to head back to Upper Town, stopping at a grocery store along the way, and have an early night in.
A stunning building on Rue Sainte-Jean, which we took a left onto from Ave Cartier to head back north to Upper Town. I am IN LOVE with all the silver roofs of this city!!
Yet another beautiful church, still on Rue St-Jean
Another gorgeous building on Rue St-Jean
This was our grocery destination. This is the oldest continuously operating food shop (since 1871) in North America - wow! And, wait until you see inside!!!
The first counter you come to when you enter, with coffee and tea. This place smelled fabulous!!
I read that some of the wooden shelves were original from the 1800s
St. Matthew's ... the church that abuts the oldest cemetery in Quebec City. Now a library.
Looking inside the door of St. Matthew's
The history of St. Matthew's ... the city restored the graveyard, which had graves dating back to the 1700s
Old graves, many of which had the inscription worn away, but they keep a book in the church/library with all the old epitaphs
I like the image at the top
From there we continued to Upper Town to head back home.
We've now entered Upper Town on Rue St-Jean
Upper Town
One last image of Upper Town
From there we took the funicular back down to Lower Town, picked up our Jean Grenier art (images later as they are all bubble-wrapped for the journey) from the gallery we purchased it at, then stopped at the hand-painted silk-scarf shop at the end of Rue du Petit-Champlain to get me a GORGEOUS memento!!! Or, two. :D
That's all folks! I hope you'll continue to join us for our remaining 4 days of our French-Canadian honeymoon!!
:D
As always, here is a link to ALL the photos I took on this journey: Honeymoon Day V, Funicular & Upper Town & Ave Cartier, Quebec
